The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 8ΗΣΑΪΑΣ Η′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Inscribed judgment, household signs, and holy fear test the people under Immanuel.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 8 extends the Immanuel crisis by turning prophecy into inscription, family sign, and public test. The Septuagint foregrounds the written tablet and the child with the rapid-plunder name, so that the downfall of Damascus and Samaria is fixed in advance before it occurs. The chapter then contrasts two waters: the quiet waters of Siloam, which the people refuse, and the overwhelming river identified with the king of Assyria, which floods the land. That political section gives way to a sustained theological exhortation about fear, holiness, stumbling, and trust. The Lord must be sanctified rather than the panic of the crowd. Those who rely on him find a sanctuary; those who resist encounter a stone of stumbling. The closing verses oppose prophetic law and divine testimony to necromantic consultation and end in hunger, darkness, and constriction, while the final verse points forward to the dawn that follows in the next chapter.

And the Lord said to me, Take for yourself a new large scroll and write on it with a man's stylus: Swiftly make spoil, for plunder is at hand.

Command inscriptionasyndeton
The Lord begins by turning the prophecy into a public written sign. The urgency of the inscription matches the speed of the coming plunder.
