The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 13ΗΣΑΪΑΣ ΙΓ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Babylon is mustered for the day of the Lord and left desolate.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 13 is the opening Babylon oracle, framed as a prophetic vision and developed as a day-of-the-Lord assault that begins with the mustering of a divine army and ends with the permanent desolation of the imperial city. The Septuagint heightens the scene with distinctive Greek features: the invaders are described as sanctified and giant-like agents of wrath (13:3), the heavenly host including Orion is darkened (13:10), and Babylon's aftermath is populated by eerie wilderness beings such as sirens, demons, and onocentaurs (13:21-22). The chapter moves from summons, to cosmic terror, to historical instrumentality in the Medes, and finally to an anti-creation wilderness where no ordinary civic life can return. The notes below follow the Greek diction as it stands, especially where the LXX's phrasing sharpens the themes of proud imperial collapse and irreversible divine visitation.
