The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 14ΗΣΑΪΑΣ ΙΔ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Jacob is restored, and the fallen tyrant becomes a taunt in Sheol.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 14 begins as a restoration oracle for Jacob and then pivots into one of the Septuagint's most memorable taunt songs against a fallen imperial ruler. The chapter first reverses servitude, imagining foreigners joined to Israel and former captors themselves reduced to subjection (14:1-2), then develops a funeral-lament over the king of Babylon in which earth, Lebanon, Hades, and the kings of the nations all participate. The famous line about the ἑωσφόρος, the morning star fallen from heaven (14:12), belongs here to the rhetoric of arrogant royal self-exaltation brought violently low. The chapter closes by widening the horizon from Babylon to Assyria and Philistia, showing that the Lord's fixed counsel reaches every imperial or hostile power that opposes Zion. The annotations below follow the Greek chapter as a unified movement from restored Jacob, to mocked tyrant, to the unanswerable purpose of the Lord.

καὶ ἐλεήσει κύριος τὸν Ιακωβ καὶ ἐκλέξεται ἔτι τὸν Ισραηλ καὶ ἀναπαύσονται ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς αὐτῶν καὶ ὁ γιώρας προστεθήσεται πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ προστεθήσεται πρὸς τὸν οἶκον Ιακωβ

And the Lord will have mercy on Jacob and will yet choose Israel, and they will rest upon their land, and the resident alien will be joined to them and will be added to the house of Jacob.

Restorationasyndeton
The chapter opens not with taunt but with mercy. Restoration includes rest in the land and the surprising attachment of the sojourner to Jacob.
