The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 20ΗΣΑΪΑΣ Κ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Isaiah's naked sign warns that Egypt and Cush cannot save.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 20 is brief but rhetorically sharp. The chapter begins with a historical notice about the Assyrian attack on Ashdod, then turns to a prophetic sign-act in which Isaiah walks naked and barefoot as a living portent. In the Septuagint this enacted oracle interprets the fate not only of Egypt but also of Ethiopia: the very nations in which others hoped will themselves be led away exposed and ashamed by the king of Assyria. The chapter's power lies in the movement from symbolic obedience to geopolitical unmasking. Trust in impressive southern powers proves as fragile as clothing stripped from the body, and the coastland observers are left asking how anyone who relied on such allies will now escape. The annotations below follow the LXX's compact historical frame, its sign language, and its polemic against misplaced political confidence.

In the year when Tartan entered into Ashdod, when he had been sent by Arna king of the Assyrians, and he fought against Ashdod and captured it.

Headingasyndeton
The chapter opens with a terse historical frame. Assyria's campaign against Ashdod gives the sign-act a concrete political setting.
