The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 21ΗΣΑΪΑΣ ΚΑ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Babylon, Dumah, and Arabia hear brief night-oracles of collapse and waiting.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 21 gathers three short burdens into a single chapter, and the Septuagint gives them a distinctive rhetorical shape. The first movement presents the 'desert' vision as a storm-driven report whose emotional center is not only Babylon's fall but the prophet's bodily distress before that fall arrives. The watchman scene then slows the chapter down: the command to stand guard, the repeated attention to seeing and hearing, and the climactic cry that Babylon has fallen make divine judgment arrive through testimony rather than through battle narrative alone. The brief exchange about Idumea compresses wakefulness, inquiry, and delay into a dark riddle, while the final section turns toward Arabia and measures political collapse in terms of fugitives, thirst, bread, and a hired worker's fixed year. Across the whole chapter the Greek is interested in surveillance, exhaustion, and the sudden stripping away of regional glory, so the annotations below follow the LXX's own literary sequencing rather than flattening the three burdens into a single undifferentiated oracle.

τὸ ὅραμα τῆς ἐρήμου ὡς καταιγὶς δι' ἐρήμου διέλθοι ἐξ ἐρήμου ἐρχομένη ἐκ γῆς φοβερὸν

The vision of the desert: like a storm passing through the wilderness, it comes from the desert, from a fearful land.

Headingasyndeton
The chapter opens with a burden introduced through violent desert imagery. The coming vision is pictured not as static information but as something rushing in from a terrifying region.

A hard vision was announced to me: the faithless one deals faithlessly, the lawless one acts lawlessly. Against me the Elamites and the envoys of the Persians are coming. Now I will groan and console myself.

Elaborationasyndeton
The content of the vision is named as severe and then unpacked through treachery, lawlessness, and advancing eastern forces. The prophet’s response is immediate grief and self-address.
