The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 22ΗΣΑΪΑΣ ΚΒ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Jerusalem's panic, false festivity, and proud stewards are brought low.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 22 is one of the LXX's sharpest prophetic portraits of civic panic without repentance. The opening burden names Zion paradoxically as a valley, then shows the city animated by noise, rooftop activity, waterworks, and fortifications, yet morally unmoored because it does not look to the one who made and formed it. The middle of the chapter contrasts the Lord's call to mourning with the population's chosen feast, crystallized in the nihilistic maxim about eating and drinking before death. The final section turns from public crisis to office-holding, first humiliating Somnas and then elevating Eliakim with robe, crown, and Davidic glory; yet even that stabilizing transfer is qualified by the last verse, where what seems firmly fixed can still be shaken down. The Greek wording highlights both the administrative texture of the passage and the instability of all merely human security, so the notes below keep together the themes of siege preparation, failed perception, and delegated authority.

The word concerning the valley of Zion: what has happened to you now, that you have all gone up to the housetops?

Headingasyndeton
The burden opens with a question that frames Zion’s behavior as abnormal and alarming. The city is identified by paradox and elevation at once, a valley whose people climb upward in panic.
