The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 23ΗΣΑΪΑΣ ΚΓ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Tyre's maritime glory is stripped down by the Lord of hosts.

Translation & textual notes

The Septuagint's Tyre oracle leans hard into maritime commerce: ships of Carthage, Kittim, Sidon, and Canaan frame Tyre as a sea-borne trading power whose prestige is dismantled by the Lord of hosts. The Greek also sharpens the chapter's ironic turn by letting Tyre's commerce return only to be redirected into something consecrated before the Lord, so the chapter moves from mercantile pride through humiliation to a surprising sanctification of gain.

τὸ ὅραμα Τύρου ὀλολύζετε πλοῖα Καρχηδόνος ὅτι ἀπώλετο καὶ οὐκέτι ἔρχονται ἐκ γῆς Κιτιαίων ἦκται αἰχμάλωτος

The vision concerning Tyre: wail, ships of Carthage, because she has perished, and they no longer come from the land of the Kittim; she has been led away captive.

Announcementasyndeton
The oracle opens with a direct maritime lament. Tyre's fall is announced through the grief of ships and trade routes rather than through military detail.
