Theme

The desert blooms as the redeemed return on the holy way.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 35 answers the devastation of the previous chapter with a concentrated restoration oracle. The Septuagint presents the wilderness not merely as repaired land but as a liturgical participant: the desert rejoices, blooms, and receives the borrowed glory of Lebanon and Carmel. The chapter then turns from landscape to body, promising strengthened knees, opened eyes, restored hearing, and a loosened tongue before moving to the image of a holy road on which the redeemed return without threat or defilement. The Greek wording has several distinct turns, including the reference to the wildernesses of the Jordan, the emphasis on the scattered who travel the holy way, and the final picture of praise overtaking the returnees. Taken as a whole, the chapter functions as an eschatological reversal of exile, disability, danger, and sorrow under the direct coming of Israel's God.

Callasyndeton
