Theme

The nations, and especially Edom, are devoted to total desolation.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 34 in the Septuagint is a concentrated judgment poem against the nations, focused especially on Idumea as the emblem of total devastation. The chapter opens by summoning earth, rulers, and the inhabited world to hear, then unfolds a cosmic theater in which mountains dissolve in blood, the heavens roll up like a scroll, and the Lord's sword descends from heaven already drunk with slaughter. Its sacrificial language is deliberate: Edom's ruin is cast as a great offering in Bosor, so that political overthrow is imagined in liturgical and cultic terms. The final movement intensifies the desolation by filling the land with pitch, sulfur, measuring lines of ruin, desert birds, demons, onocentaurs, sirens, and strange animal rest. The Greek version lingers over this transformed landscape and closes by insisting that the creatures inhabit it by divine command and allotment, making the ruin not accidental waste but a decreed, enduring inheritance of judgment.
