Theme

The destroyer is answered by Zion's secure future under the Lord's kingship.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 33 in the Septuagint moves from a woe against the destroyer to a vision of Zion's secure future under the Lord's kingship. The chapter begins with reversal: the one who devastates others will himself be seized, while Judah pleads for mercy in a time of affliction. The middle movements alternate between divine self-exaltation and exposure of the nations' fear, stressing that wisdom, law, and reverent knowledge of the Lord are Zion's real treasure rather than diplomacy or force. The closing section sharpens the ethical demand placed upon those who would dwell near the consuming fire, then turns toward a transformed Jerusalem whose tent pegs do not fail, whose waters are broad and inaccessible to hostile ships, and whose people receive both healing and forgiveness. The Greek text is rhetorically tight and at several points distinctive in diction, especially in its meditation on fear, covenantal collapse, and the stable riches of Zion.
