The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 37ΗΣΑΪΑΣ ΛΖ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The Lord answers Hezekiah, humbles Sennacherib, and defends Zion.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 37 is the Septuagint's climactic Hezekiah-Sennacherib deliverance narrative, closely parallel to 4 Kingdoms 19 but presented here within Isaiah's prophetic book as the historical proving ground of the Zion oracles. The chapter moves from ritual lament and prophetic consultation, through Sennacherib's renewed written blasphemy, to Hezekiah's temple prayer and Isaiah's answering oracle of judgment. The Greek keeps the scene stark and public: the living God is contrasted with the crafted gods of the nations, Zion is personified as the mocking virgin daughter, and Assyrian imperial self-exaltation is answered by the Lord's sovereign claim to have long ago ordained the rise and fall of nations. The sign of the remnant taking root downward and bearing fruit upward links immediate rescue to Judah's ongoing future, while the final assassination of Sennacherib in the house of his own god seals the theological verdict of the chapter.

And it came to pass, when King Hezekiah heard, that he tore his garments, clothed himself in sackcloth, and went up to the house of the Lord.

Narrationasyndeton
The crisis turns from public insult to penitential response. Hezekiah's torn garments, sackcloth, and temple ascent frame the chapter as a contest to be answered before the Lord rather than merely by policy.

And he sent Eliakim the steward, Somnas the scribe, and the elders of the priests, clothed in sackcloth, to Isaiah son of Amos the prophet.

And Isaiah said to them, Thus you shall say to your master: Thus says the Lord, Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, with which the envoys of the king of the Assyrians reproached me.

Oracleasyndeton
Isaiah's answer directly counters the fear generated by Assyrian speech. The insult is treated primarily as an offense against God himself, not merely against Judah.

Thus you shall say to Hezekiah king of Judea: Let not your God, in whom you trust, deceive you by saying, Jerusalem shall certainly not be delivered into the hands of the king of the Assyrians.

And Isaiah son of Amos was sent to Hezekiah and said to him, Thus says the Lord God of Israel: I have heard what you prayed to me concerning Sennacherib king of the Assyrians.

The answer comes through the prophet in direct response to prayer. The opening line makes the divine hearing requested in v. 17 a narrative reality.
