Theme

Hezekiah is healed from death and answers with a king's thanksgiving.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 38 joins court narrative and royal thanksgiving in a way that gives the Hezekiah cycle both public and intimate depth. The chapter begins with a death sentence and a prayer turned toward the wall, but it quickly becomes a witness to the Lord's hearing, seeing, adding years, and defending Jerusalem. The sign of the returning shadow makes cosmic motion itself answer the prophetic word. At the chapter's center stands Hezekiah's prayer-song, where the king interprets illness through images of Sheol, severed tent-cords, shattered bones, birdsong, and restored breath. The Septuagintal form is especially striking in its movement from mortal compression to praise before the house of God: healing is not merely survival, but renewed capacity to bless the Lord among the living and to hand on his righteousness to the next generation.

And it came to pass in that time that Hezekiah became weak unto death, and Isaiah son of Amos the prophet came to him and said to him, Thus says the Lord: Set your house in order, for you are dying and shall not live.

Narrationasyndeton
The narrative opens with the king under a death sentence and the prophet bearing an apparently final word. The blunt command to order the household gives the scene immediate personal urgency.
