Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 49 is one of the great servant passages in the Septuagint. The chapter moves from the servant's prenatal calling and sharpened prophetic mouth to his apparent frustration, then expands his mission beyond Jacob to the nations and the ends of the earth. The Greek repeatedly ties salvation to restoration: prisoners are summoned out, the desolate land is re-inherited, and Zion's complaint of abandonment is answered with maternal and even bodily imagery of divine remembrance. The close turns triumphal and political as nations, kings, and queens become bearers of Zion's children, while the Lord asserts that even the prey of the mighty can be rescued by his judgment.
