Theme

The barren, abandoned woman is restored in lasting covenant compassion.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 54 follows the servant poem with a restoration oracle addressed to Zion as a barren and abandoned woman whom the Lord now reclaims. The Septuagint emphasizes both reversal and permanence: the deserted one is commanded to rejoice, expand, and forget her old shame because the Lord of hosts is her maker and redeemer. The chapter also links this restoration to covenant stability, comparing the promise to the oath after Noah's flood and ending with an image of a rebuilt city whose children are taught by God and whose enemies cannot prosper. The movement is from infertility and reproach to mercy, architectural splendor, and secure righteousness under the Lord's protection.
