Theme

The thirsty are invited freely into covenant mercy and fruitful return.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 55 is the Septuagint's great invitation chapter, summoning the thirsty and impoverished to receive God's gifts without payment and then grounding that summons in covenant promise. The Greek foregrounds the Davidic dimension of the oracle, presenting the faithful mercies of David as a public witness that draws unknown nations toward Israel's God. The chapter then turns to repentance, contrasting divine counsel and human counsel, and climaxes in the rain-and-word comparison: the Lord's utterance does not return empty but accomplishes what he wills. The close recasts restoration as a joyful procession in which creation itself welcomes the redeemed and the curse of wasteland vegetation is reversed into a lasting sign of the Lord's name.
