Theme

True covenant keeping welcomes foreigners and eunuchs into the Lord's house.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 56 opens the next movement of the book by joining ethical urgency to an expansive vision of covenant inclusion. The Septuagint begins with the demand to keep justice because the Lord's salvation and mercy are near, then offers one of its sharpest statements that those once excluded, especially eunuchs and foreigners, may receive a lasting place in God's house if they hold fast to his covenant. The famous declaration that the temple will be called a house of prayer for all nations stands at the chapter's center. The final section turns abruptly to indictment: Israel's watchmen are blind, mute, and greedy like useless dogs, so predatory beasts are invited to devour. The chapter therefore moves from inclusive promise to severe critique of failed leadership.
