Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Job 10 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Job 10 continues and intensifies Job's direct address to God. The chapter begins with exhausted bitterness and moves immediately into a series of sharp questions: why does the Creator seem determined to scrutinize, condemn, and crush the very creature his own hands formed? Job appeals both to divine transcendence and to divine craftsmanship. God is not a short-lived human judge who must investigate under conditions of ignorance, and yet God himself fashioned Job like clay, milked and curdled him into embodied life, clothed him with skin and flesh, and guarded his spirit. That memory of careful creation makes present destruction appear incomprehensible. The chapter then turns from creation to prosecution, as Job laments that whether he sins or not he cannot escape humiliation, predatory treatment, repeated testing, and the pull of death. The close asks only for a brief respite before the irreversible journey to the dark land from which no one returns. Read as a whole, the chapter binds lament, protest, creation theology, and mortality into one of Job's most intimate and theologically daring speeches.
