Theme

Job 31 is the culminating oath of innocence that answers the collapse narrated in chapter 30.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Job 31 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Job 31 is the culminating oath of innocence that answers the collapse narrated in chapter 30. Instead of merely protesting pain, Job now lays out a sequence of conditional self-imprecations: if he has lusted, deceived, oppressed servants, neglected the poor, trusted wealth, worshiped celestial powers, rejoiced over an enemy, hidden sin, or exploited his land, then let judgment fall on him openly. The chapter therefore moves through sexual purity, judicial integrity, household justice, compassion for the vulnerable, detachment from wealth and idolatry, generosity to enemies and strangers, and finally economic righteousness in relation to the land itself. In the Septuagint form the speech also becomes strikingly forensic. Job asks for the written accusation, wishes to wear it like a crown, and longs for someone to hear him before the Lord. The chapter thus functions as Job's final formal defense before the divine answer: he binds himself by oath because he believes his life can endure scrutiny.
