Theme

Elihu’s first direct reply to Job begins by insisting that he speaks as a fellow creature rather than as an overwhelming judge: both men were formed from the same clay, so Job need not fear him.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Job 33 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Elihu’s first direct reply to Job begins by insisting that he speaks as a fellow creature rather than as an overwhelming judge: both men were formed from the same clay, so Job need not fear him. From that footing Elihu restates Job’s complaint in compressed form: Job claims purity, yet says God treats him like an enemy and refuses to answer his case. Elihu rejects the premise that divine silence proves indifference. The center of the chapter argues that God does in fact speak, but not always in the kind of courtroom exchange Job demands. He warns through dreams, dread in the night, bodily weakness, wasting illness, and finally through a mediating messenger who teaches repentance. Those painful interventions are interpreted as merciful restraints that turn a person from injustice and keep his life from the pit. The chapter therefore reframes suffering as one of the ways the Almighty instructs, humbles, and restores. Elihu closes by inviting Job either to answer and be justified or else to keep silence and learn wisdom.
