The Book of Job, Chapter 34ΙΩΒ ΛΔ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Theme

This second Elihu speech widens from direct address to public judgment: Elihu summons the wise to sit with him and test Job’s words the way the ear tests speech and the throat tests food.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Job 34 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This second Elihu speech widens from direct address to public judgment: Elihu summons the wise to sit with him and test Job’s words the way the ear tests speech and the throat tests food. He claims that Job’s protest of righteousness has effectively accused God of overturning justice and has therefore aligned Job’s speech with the irreverent. The chapter’s theological center is Elihu’s insistence that the Almighty neither commits wickedness nor distorts judgment. Because he is creator, sustainer, and watcher of every human path, he owes no account to any mortal and can depose princes, expose the powerful, and hear the cry of the poor without partiality. Elihu then asks what a proper response before such a God would sound like: not self-vindicating argument, but confession, teachability, and the renunciation of further sin. The speech closes by charging Job with speaking without knowledge and by warning that his multiplying words risk adding rebellion to sin. In the broader flow of Job, chapter 34 develops Elihu’s core conviction that divine justice is structurally trustworthy even when its operations remain opaque to the sufferer.
