Translation & textual notes

Job 4 opens Eliphaz’s first response to Job and establishes the argumentative pattern that will dominate much of the dialogue. The speech is not a detached meditation on suffering but a carefully staged attempt to pull Job back under a traditional retributive framework. Eliphaz begins by reminding Job of his past as a moral instructor, one whose words once steadied the weak and restored the failing. That recollection sharpens the rebuke: Job, who formerly strengthened others, now collapses when the same sort of affliction reaches him. From there Eliphaz articulates the wisdom principle that governs his reading of the case. The innocent do not perish; those who plow trouble reap it. The predatory imagery of verses 10-11 extends that principle into the animal world, portraying fierce power itself as vulnerable to collapse. The speech then claims a higher warrant than observation alone. Eliphaz recounts a fearful nocturnal revelation in which terror, sound, breath, and indistinct form create an atmosphere of numinous instability. The oracle delivered in that vision is the chapter’s theological center: no mortal is pure before the Lord, and even heavenly beings do not stand beyond divine scrutiny. The conclusion presses human fragility in earthy terms, depicting people as dwellers in houses of clay, easily struck, unable to preserve themselves, and prone to perish for lack of wisdom. In the Greek chapter as a whole, Eliphaz combines pastoral memory, conventional sapiential logic, and visionary authority in order to imply that Job’s suffering must disclose moral fault rather than innocent anguish.
