The Book of Job, Chapter 40ΙΩΒ Μ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Theme

In the LXX numbering, this chapter contains both Job’s brief surrender and the opening of the creature-speech that in many English traditions is divided between Behemoth and Leviathan.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Job 40 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. In the LXX numbering, this chapter contains both Job’s brief surrender and the opening of the creature-speech that in many English traditions is divided between Behemoth and Leviathan. The chapter falls into two movements. First, the Lord confronts Job’s attempt to contend with divine judgment, and Job answers with silence, laying his hand on his mouth and refusing to continue his protest. Second, the Lord presses the challenge further: if Job would question God’s rule, let him assume the insignia of majesty, humble the proud, and govern the violent. That challenge immediately turns into the description of overwhelming creatures whose life, force, and untamable character lie wholly beyond human mastery. Behemoth-like strength is described in its loins, bones, and river-haunts; then the imagery shifts toward the dragon-like monster whom no one can domesticate, bargain with, or treat as a toy. The theological point is continuous. Divine justice is not an abstract principle available for human administration at will, but part of the same created order that includes immense, wild, and fearsome powers. Job can neither execute final judgment nor master the creatures that embody untamed might. The chapter therefore deepens Job’s submission: the world’s moral and creaturely immensities remain under God’s hand, not Job’s.
