Judith 10 narrates the transition from prayer to enacted stratagem.

Translation & textual notes

Judith 10 narrates the transition from prayer to enacted stratagem. The chapter lingers over the reversal of mourning signs, the tactical use of beauty, and the carefully prepared food and drink that will preserve Judith's ritual separation in the enemy camp. Once she leaves Bethulia, the narrative repeatedly emphasizes the effect of her appearance: first on the elders of the city, then on the Assyrian advance guard, then on the camp as a whole, and finally on Holofernes himself. Beauty, in other words, is not ornamental background but one of the instruments by which Judith secures access to the place where deliverance will be accomplished.
