The Book of Judith, Chapter 11ΙΟΥΔΙΘ ΙΑ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Translation & textual notes

Judith 11 is the great speech of deception. Holofernes begins by offering security to any who submit to imperial power, but Judith answers with a mixture of truth and calculated falsehood. She speaks truly about Israel's God and the principle that military defeat comes only through covenantal sin, yet she lies about the immediate state of Bethulia in order to lure Holofernes into complacent confidence. The chapter therefore turns theology into strategy: authentic covenant logic is pressed into the service of a ruse that will bring the arrogant general to ruin.
