The Book of Lamentations, Chapter 4ΘΡΗΝΟΙ Δ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Visible reversals expose Zion's famine, defilement, and royal collapse.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Lamentations 4 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The fourth poem concentrates on reversal in visible, bodily terms. Gold darkens, princes become earthenware, children starve, compassionate women boil their own children, Nazirites lose their brightness, and Jerusalem's once-protected leadership is exposed as bloodstained and rejected. Moral and political explanation intertwine throughout: prophetic and priestly guilt, failed foreign hopes, relentless pursuit, and the capture of the Lord's anointed all contribute to the ruin. The poem ends by turning briefly toward Edom and by announcing that Zion's punishment has reached its limit while Edom's exposure still lies ahead.
