Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Leviticus 19 is the programmatic centre of the so-called Holiness Code (Lev 17–26): a dense mosaic of cultic, ethical, and social legislation framed by the imperative ἅγιοι ἔσεσθε, ὅτι ἐγὼ ἅγιος, κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν ('You shall be holy, because I, the LORD your God, am holy', v.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Leviticus 19 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs–Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. 2). The chapter re-presents the Decalogue in fresh order — reverence for parents and Sabbath (v. 3), prohibition of idols and molten gods (v. 4), the name of God not sworn falsely (v. 12), theft and fraud (vv. 11, 13) — and interweaves it with distinctively communitarian law: the harvest and the vineyard are not to be reaped to the edges, but the gleanings left τῷ πτωχῷ καὶ τῷ προσηλύτῳ ('for the poor and the sojourner', vv. 9–10; cf. Ruth 2; 2 Cor 9:9), and the wage of the hired laborer is not to be withheld overnight (v. 13; cf. Jas 5:4). The LXX renders the famous double commandment of v. 18 — ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν ('you shall love your neighbor as yourself') — in the precise form quoted at Matt 22:39; Mark 12:31; Rom 13:9; Gal 5:14; Jas 2:8, and extends the same love to the resident alien at v. 34 (καὶ ἀγαπήσεις αὐτὸν ὡς σεαυτόν), grounded in Israel's own sojourn in Egypt. Interspersed are prohibitions of cursing the deaf and tripping the blind (v. 14), partial judgment (v. 15), slander and bloodguilt (v. 16), hatred and vengeance (vv. 17–18), mixing of cattle, seed, and cloth (v. 19), eating with the blood, divination and augury (v. 26), the pagan rounding of the hair and beard and tattooing for the dead (vv. 27–28), cultic prostitution (v. 29), necromancy and mediums (v. 31), and dishonest weights and measures (vv. 35–36). The whole is punctuated, with liturgical insistence, by the self-identification formula ἐγώ εἰμι κύριος / ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν, which recurs roughly fifteen times, transforming a miscellany of laws into a sustained theophonic refrain: each command is anchored not in social utility but in the character and lordship of the God who speaks it.

καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

New divine speech-act (standard Levitical introduction)καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος
The formula καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων is the recurrent LXX heading for a new block of divine legislation in Leviticus (cf. 4:1; 6:1; 18:1); it renders the Hebrew וַיְדַבֵּר יהוה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר. Here it opens the central chapter of the Holiness Code.

Speak to the congregation of the sons of Israel and say to them, 'You shall be holy, because I, the LORD your God, am holy.'

Programmatic imperative: the thesis of the whole Holiness Codeλάλησον τῇ συναγωγῇ
The command is addressed not to priests alone but to the whole συναγωγή ('congregation/assembly') — the holiness demanded is congregational, not merely sacerdotal. The clause ἅγιοι ἔσεσθε ὅτι ἐγὼ ἅγιος is the programmatic header of Lev 17–26 and is taken up verbatim at 1 Pet 1:16.

ἕκαστος πατέρα αὐτοῦ καὶ μητέρα αὐτοῦ φοβείσθω καὶ τὰ σάββατά μου φυλάξεσθε ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν

Let each one fear his father and his mother, and you shall keep my Sabbaths; I am the LORD your God.

First specification: reverence for parents and Sabbath (Decalogue's fifth and fourth)ἕκαστος ... φοβείσθω
The chapter opens its concrete legislation by re-presenting the Decalogue, but with parents and Sabbath joined and the verb φοβέομαι ('fear/revere') substituted for the τιμάω ('honor') of Exod 20:12 — reverence for parents is set on the same plane as reverence for God. Note the striking order: mother is named alongside father, and in the parallel at Lev 19, reverence and Sabbath stand together.

You shall not follow after idols, and you shall not make for yourselves molten gods; I am the LORD your God.

Second specification: prohibition of idols (Decalogue's first/second)οὐκ ἐπακολουθήσετε
The first-table commands continue: no following after εἴδωλα ('idols', a contemptuous LXX term) and no making of θεοὶ χωνευτοί ('molten/cast gods'), echoing Exod 20:4 and the golden-calf catastrophe (Exod 32:4, where χωνευτός also appears). The refrain ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν again seals the clause.

καὶ ἐὰν θύσητε θυσίαν σωτηρίου τῷ κυρίῳ δεκτὴν ὑμῶν θύσετε

And if you sacrifice a peace-offering to the LORD, you shall offer it so as to be acceptable for you.

Transition: cultic legislation on the peace-offering (new sub-section)καὶ ἐὰν θύσητε
The legislation turns from the Decalogue-summary to the σωτήριον ('peace/well-being offering'), the one sacrifice partly eaten by the worshipper. The conditional ἐὰν + subjunctive opens a case-law; the concern is that the offering be δεκτή ('acceptable'), i.e. eaten within the prescribed time-frame spelled out in vv. 6–8.

The penalty clause closes the peace-offering rules: the participial subject ὁ ἔσθων ('the one eating') bears guilt because he has profaned τὰ ἅγια κυρίου ('the holy things of the LORD'). The kāret penalty — ἐξολεθρευθήσονται ... ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ ('shall be cut off from the people') — is the gravest of Levitical sanctions, denoting removal from the covenant community.

Transition: the gleaning law (covenant charity built into agriculture)καὶ ἐκθεριζόντων ὑμῶν
The genitive-absolute ἐκθεριζόντων ὑμῶν ('while you reap') opens the famous gleaning law. The harvester is forbidden to reap the field to its edge or to retrieve the fallen ears; the surplus is reserved (v. 10) for the poor and the sojourner. This statute is the legal background of Ruth 2 and is invoked by Paul's harvest-charity language at 2 Cor 9.

You shall not do injustice in judgment; you shall not show partiality to the poor, nor admire the face of the mighty; in righteousness you shall judge your neighbor.

New cluster: impartial justice in the courtοὐ ποιήσετε ἄδικον ἐν κρίσει
Justice must be blind to social standing in both directions: neither favoring the poor (out of misplaced sympathy) nor deferring to the powerful. The idiom λαμβάνειν πρόσωπον ('receive the face' = show partiality) is the Hebraism נָשָׂא פָנִים, the root of NT προσωπολημψία ('partiality', Rom 2:11; Jas 2:1). The positive command ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ κρινεῖς caps the cluster.

You shall not go about with deceit among your people; you shall not stand up against the blood of your neighbor; I am the LORD your God.

Continuation: slander and bloodguiltοὐ πορεύσῃ δόλῳ
Two prohibitions against the lethal misuse of speech and influence: going about as a slanderer/talebearer (πορεύσῃ δόλῳ, rendering the Hebrew 'go as a רָכִיל, slanderer') and conspiring against a neighbor's life (ἐπισυστήσῃ ἐφ᾽ αἷμα). The connection between slander and bloodshed is direct — the false word can become judicial murder. The refrain seals the prohibition.

You shall not hate your brother in your heart; you shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and you shall not incur sin because of him.

Climactic cluster (1): no inward hatred; open reproof insteadοὐ μισήσεις τὸν ἀδελφόν σου
The chapter's ethical summit begins here and culminates in v. 18. Hatred is located τῇ διανοίᾳ ('in the heart/mind') — the law reaches the interior disposition, not merely the act. The remedy is open reproof (ἐλεγμῷ ἐλέγξεις, an emphatic cognate construction), so that one does not 'incur sin because of him' by letting resentment fester into guilt or by failing the brother through silence.

And your hand shall not take vengeance, and you shall not bear a grudge against the sons of your people; and you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD.

ETHICAL CLIMAX of the chapter and of Levitical law: the great commandmentκαὶ ... ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν
The headline crux of the chapter. Vengeance and grudge-bearing are forbidden as the active forms of the hatred named in v. 17; the positive command ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν ('you shall love your neighbor as yourself') is the summit. It is cited verbatim in the LXX form by Jesus as the second great commandment (Matt 22:39; Mark 12:31; cf. Luke 10:27) and by the apostles as the summary of the whole law (Rom 13:9; Gal 5:14; Jas 2:8, 'the royal law'). The unusually short refrain ἐγώ εἰμι κύριος (without ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν) seals it with stark divine authority.

Case-law: intercourse with a betrothed bondwomanκαὶ ἐάν τις κοιμηθῇ
A casuistic statute interrupts the apodictic series: intercourse with a slave-woman betrothed (διαπεφυλαγμένη, 'reserved/kept') to a man but not yet redeemed or freed. Because her unfree status removes the case from ordinary adultery (which is capital), there is to be ἐπισκοπή ('an inquiry / investigation') rather than death. The legal point turns on her not yet having been set free (ἀπηλευθερώθη).

And the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of trespass before the LORD for his sin which he committed, and the sin which he committed shall be forgiven him.

The priest enacts ἐξιλασμός ('atonement / propitiation') with the trespass-ram, and the result is ἀφεθήσεται ('it shall be forgiven'). The atonement-and-forgiveness formula (ἐξιλάσεται ... καὶ ἀφεθήσεται) is the standard Levitical absolution-pattern; both verbs are central to NT soteriology (ἱλασμός, 1 John 2:2; ἄφεσις, Eph 1:7).

You shall not eat upon the mountains, and you shall not practice augury nor observe omens by birds.

New cluster: prohibition of pagan cult and divinationμὴ ἔσθετε ἐπὶ τῶν ὀρέων
A block of prohibitions against Canaanite-style rites begins. 'Eating upon the mountains' (the LXX rendering of 'eating with the blood') evokes pagan high-place sacrificial feasts; οἰωνίζομαι ('augury') and ὀρνιθοσκοπέομαι ('bird-omen reading') name forms of divination forbidden because they seek hidden knowledge from sources other than YHWH (cf. You shall not profane your daughter by prostituting her, and the land shall not play the harlot, and the land shall not be filled with lawlessness.

Continuation: prohibition of cultic/commercial prostitutionοὐ βεβηλώσεις τὴν θυγατέρα σου
The prohibition of prostituting one's daughter (likely cult-prostitution) is grounded in a corporate consequence: such defilement causes the land itself to 'play the harlot' (ἐκπορνεύσει ἡ γῆ) and to be 'filled with lawlessness' (ἀνομίας). The personification of the land as morally defiled anticipates the Holiness Code's later warning that the land 'vomits out' its defilers (Lev 18:25, 28; 20:22).

ἐὰν δέ τις προσέλθῃ προσήλυτος ὑμῖν ἐν τῇ γῇ ὑμῶν οὐ θλίψετε αὐτόν

And if a sojourner comes to you in your land, you shall not oppress him.

New section: the treatment of the resident alienἐὰν δέ τις προσέλθῃ προσήλυτος
The chapter returns to the προσήλυτος ('sojourner/resident alien'), already named as a beneficiary of the gleaning law (v. 10). The first command is purely protective: do not oppress (θλίψετε) the alien. This sets up the extraordinary positive command of v. 34 — to love the sojourner as oneself.

The sojourner who comes to you shall be among you as the native, and you shall love him as yourself, because you were sojourners in the land of Egypt; I am the LORD your God.

Second love-command: the sojourner loved as oneself (parallel to v. 18)ὡς ὁ αὐτόχθων ... καὶ ἀγαπήσεις αὐτὸν ὡς σεαυτόν
The companion crux to v. 18. The alien is to be treated ὡς ὁ αὐτόχθων ('as the native-born') and — strikingly — καὶ ἀγαπήσεις αὐτὸν ὡς σεαυτόν ('you shall love him as yourself'), the love-command of v. 18 now explicitly extended beyond the in-group to the foreigner. The ground is empathy rooted in memory: 'you were sojourners in Egypt.' This verse widens the scope of neighbor-love and anticipates Jesus' redefinition of 'neighbor' (Luke 10:29–37).
