Theme

The Song at the Sea opens the collection with praise for the Lord who overthrows empire and plants his redeemed people.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Odes 1 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter is the Song at the Sea recast as the opening canticle of the Odes collection. The narrative preface of Exodus is dropped, so the ode begins immediately with communal praise: the Lord has hurled horse and rider into the sea, become helper and salvation for his people, shattered the enemy's boast, and revealed his incomparable power in judgment and redemption. The latter half turns from Egypt's defeat to Israel's future passage, planting, sanctuary, and the Lord's reign, before a brief prose recapitulation closes the canticle and points ahead to the next ode.

ᾄσωμεν τῷ κυρίῳ ἐνδόξως γὰρ δεδόξασται ἵππον καὶ ἀναβάτην ἔρριψεν εἰς θάλασσαν

Let us sing to the Lord, for he has been gloriously glorified; horse and rider he hurled into the sea.

Opening canticle acclamationᾄσωμεν
The ode begins without Exodus's narrative lead-in and so functions immediately as a communal summons to praise. The opening line states the whole canticle's theme: the Lord's glory displayed in the overthrow of Pharaoh's cavalry.
