Theme

The Prayer of Azariah interprets judgment as righteous and pleads for covenant mercy amid exile and shame.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Odes 7 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Odes 7 is the Prayer of Azariah drawn from the Greek additions to Daniel 3. In the Odes collection it stands as a self-contained penitential prayer set between the narrative of the furnace and the Benedicite that follows. The chapter opens with blessing and an extended confession of God's righteousness, then moves through Israel's acknowledgment of sin, Jerusalem's judgment, and the people's present humiliation without ruler, prophet, or sacrificial access. The prayer's center is covenantal appeal: God is asked not to abandon his name, covenant, mercy, or patriarchal promises even though the worshipers have no cultic offering left to bring. The closing movement turns that deprivation into theology, asking that a broken spirit be accepted as sacrifice, pleading for deliverance and the shaming of oppressors, and ending with the heading that hands the reader on to the Hymn of the Three Children.

εὐλογητὸς εἶ κύριε ὁ θεὸς τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν καὶ αἰνετὸν καὶ δεδοξασμένον τὸ ὄνομά σου εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας

Blessed are you, O Lord, God of our fathers, and praised and glorified is your name forever.

Opening doxologyasyndeton
The prayer begins not with complaint but with blessing. In the Odes setting the line functions as a liturgical threshold: praise is offered before confession, and God's covenant identity as the God of the fathers governs everything that follows.

The blessing is immediately grounded in the Lord's justice. Before any request is voiced, Azariah insists that the divine acts against the people were not arbitrary but true, straight, and righteous.

For we sinned and acted lawlessly in turning away from you, and we sinned grievously in every way, and we did not heed your commandments.

Confession of sinὅτι
The prayer now turns from God's righteousness to Israel's guilt. The piling up of sin-language makes the exile and humiliation intelligible as the people's own rebellion against the Lord.
