Theme

The Benedicite turns the whole cosmos into a liturgy of blessing from heaven to earth.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Odes 8 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Odes 8 is the Hymn of the Three Children, the great Benedicite that follows the Prayer of Azariah in the Greek Daniel tradition. In the Odes collection the hymn is detached from the furnace narrative and so functions as a litany of cosmic praise in its own right. The chapter begins with a series of blessing-formulas directed to the Lord himself: in his holy name, in his temple, over the cherubim, upon his throne, and in the firmament of heaven. It then turns outward into the recurring summons εὐλογεῖτε ... τὸν κύριον, drawing angels, heavens, waters, weather, times, earth, sea creatures, birds, beasts, humanity, Israel, priests, servants, righteous spirits, and finally the three children themselves into one expanding chorus. The repeated refrain gives the chapter its liturgical force: every sphere of creation is summoned not merely to admire the Lord but to hymn and exalt him forever. The appended title at the close points forward within the Odes sequence to the Prayer of Mary, so the chapter serves both as a doxological climax to the Danielic material and as a hinge to the next canticle.

Blessed are you, O Lord, God of our fathers, and praised and highly exalted forever; and blessed is the holy name of your glory, highly praised and highly exalted forever.

Opening doxologyasyndeton
The hymn opens with direct blessing of the Lord before any summons is issued to creation. In the Odes setting this establishes that cosmic praise begins from God's own glory rather than from the needs of the worshipers.
