Theme

The Magnificat and Benedictus are joined into one messianic canticle of reversal, covenant remembrance, and peace.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Odes 9 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Odes 9 combines two Lucan canticles within the Odes collection: first the Magnificat of Mary (Luke 1:46-55), then the Benedictus of Zechariah (Luke 1:68-79). In their gospel setting these songs are separated by narrative frame and speakers, but the Odes sequence treats them as successive liturgical pieces joined within one chapter. The first movement is Mary's praise: personal exaltation widens into the great reversal by which God topples the proud, fills the hungry, and remembers mercy toward Israel. The second movement begins with the explicit heading 'Prayer of Zechariah' and turns from reversal to covenant visitation, Davidic salvation, forgiveness, and the prophetic vocation of the forerunner. The chapter therefore moves from praise for the Lord's overturning mercy to praise for his redemptive visitation in history. The appended heading at the close points forward within the Odes collection to the Song of Isaiah, so the chapter functions as a hinge linking the infancy canticles to the prophetic material that follows.
