The Book of Odes, Chapter 10ΩΙΔΑΙ Ι′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Isaiah's vineyard song becomes a compact canticle of failed cultivation, judgment, and predatory injustice.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Odes 10 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Odes 10 draws its material from Isaiah 5:1-9, the opening vineyard song and first woe of the prophet's larger accusation against Judah. In the Odes collection the passage is recast as a compact prophetic canticle: it begins as a love-song about a carefully prepared vineyard, turns into a lawsuit in which the hearers are asked to judge between owner and vineyard, and then resolves the metaphor by identifying the vineyard as Israel and Judah. The chapter ends not with the full Isaianic sequence of woes but with the initial denunciation of acquisitive land-grabbing, followed by the heading that points forward to the Prayer of Hezekiah. The movement is therefore sharp and deliberate: cherished planting, bitter disappointment, announced desolation, explicit interpretation, and immediate application. Within the Odes sequence it preserves Isaiah's prophetic edge while still functioning liturgically as a concise song of judgment and exposure.

Now I will sing to my beloved a song of my beloved concerning my vineyard: a vineyard came to belong to my beloved on a horn, in a fertile place.

Song openingδὴ
The chapter opens as an announced song to the beloved, so the prophetic accusation first arrives clothed as a love-song. The vineyard image is therefore introduced with tenderness before its judicial turn.

For the vineyard of the Lord Sabaoth is the house of Israel, and the man of Judah is a beloved new planting. I waited for it to produce justice, but it produced lawlessness; not righteousness, but an outcry.
