Theme

Hezekiah's song of restored life traces the path from near-death lament to vowed thanksgiving.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Odes 11 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Odes 11 is the Song of Hezekiah drawn from Isaiah 38:10-20, the king's reflection after his mortal illness and divine restoration. In the Odes collection the poem stands on its own, without the surrounding narrative of illness, prophetic word, and healing sign, so the chapter reads as a compact movement from near-death lament to recovered thanksgiving. The first half dwells on interruption, loss, and the felt approach of Hades: years are cut short, the tent is struck, the loom is severed, and the sufferer is crushed from day to night. The second half pivots toward the Lord's rescue, the casting away of sins, and the conviction that the living rather than the dead are the proper sphere of praise. The chapter ends with a vow of continued blessing before the house of God and then hands off to the Prayer of Manasseh. Within Odes, the song preserves Isaiah's existential intensity while also serving as a testimony that restored life is ordered toward renewed worship.

ἐγὼ εἶπα ἐν τῷ ὕψει τῶν ἡμερῶν μου πορεύσομαι ἐν πύλαις ᾅδου καταλείψω τὰ ἔτη τὰ ἐπίλοιπα

I said, in the height of my days I shall go in the gates of Hades; I shall leave the remaining years.

Opening lamentasyndeton
The song opens in direct first-person recollection. Hezekiah frames his crisis as an untimely descent toward Hades, so the chapter begins with interrupted life rather than restored confidence.

The lament sharpens from lost years to the loss of seeing both divine salvation and human fellowship in the land of the living. The language presses the isolation of approaching death.
