Theme

Households, hearts, speech, labor, and nations stand or collapse according to whether wisdom or folly governs them.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Proverbs 14 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter gathers a broad sequence of antithetical and synthetic sayings around household building, fear of the Lord, speech, labor, social perception, royal order, and national righteousness. Several lines are distinctly Septuagintal in their wording and arrangement, yet the chapter's moral force is consistent throughout: wisdom is constructive, reverent, patient, truthful, and socially life-giving, while folly is self-destructive, deceptive, impulsive, and blind to consequences. One recurring pattern is the movement from private interior life to public consequence. The heart knows sorrow and joy from within, but its moral orientation also shapes friendships, treatment of the poor, witness, counsel, economic stewardship, and even the stability of king and nation. The fear of the Lord emerges as a central stabilizing theme, named directly and then echoed through sayings about refuge, life, restraint, and righteousness. Read as a whole, the chapter is a map of durable order: houses, souls, cities, and peoples stand or collapse according to whether wisdom or folly governs speech, desire, and action.
