The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 17ΠΑΡΟΙΜΙΑΙ ΙΖ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Proverbs 17 gathers compact antithetical sayings on peace within the household, testing of the heart, loyalty among kin and friends, disciplined speech, judicial integrity, and the inward temper that either steadies or ruins a life.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Proverbs 17 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Proverbs 17 gathers compact antithetical sayings on peace within the household, testing of the heart, loyalty among kin and friends, disciplined speech, judicial integrity, and the inward temper that either steadies or ruins a life. The Septuagint form often sharpens the moral psychology of the chapter: hearts are assayed before the Lord, mockery of the poor becomes insult to the Creator, crooked speech and bribery distort justice, while prudent restraint, faithful friendship, and a cheerful heart preserve communal order and personal endurance.
