Theme

Proverbs 19 gathers sayings about folly, social attachment, truthful witness, mercy, discipline, and the long reach of divine counsel.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Proverbs 19 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Proverbs 19 gathers sayings about folly, social attachment, truthful witness, mercy, discipline, and the long reach of divine counsel. In the Septuagint, the chapter repeatedly sets surface appearance against durable moral reality: wealth attracts friends but not loyalty, false testimony seems expedient but is never secure, and inherited goods can be measured only against gifts that come from God himself. The chapter is also marked by its concern for ordered relationships, especially between parents and children, rulers and subjects, the prudent and the fool, and the righteous and the poor. Across these proverbs, patience, mercy, and instruction preserve life, while arrogance, sloth, and perverted speech compound ruin. Versification follows the LXX.
