The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 2ΠΑΡΟΙΜΙΑΙ Β′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Seeking wisdom like hidden treasure leads into the fear of the Lord and delivers the learner from crooked men and destructive desire.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Proverbs 2 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter develops the promise implied in Proverbs 1 by tracing a sustained if-then sequence: if the son receives the father's sayings, calls for wisdom, and searches for understanding like hidden silver, then he will come to know the fear of the Lord and the ordered moral world that God grants. The middle of the poem presents wisdom as God's own gift, one that guards the upright, teaches judgment, and forms prudent inward habits. That gift has a sharply protective purpose: it rescues from crooked men who love darkness and from the alien, destructive counsel that abandons covenantal fidelity. The chapter closes by contrasting the end of the righteous and the wicked in land-language: the good, upright, and holy remain in the land, while the ungodly and lawless are cut off from it.
