The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 3ΠΑΡΟΙΜΙΑΙ Γ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Trust, discipline, generosity, and social fidelity gather into a single wisdom homily about walking securely under the Lord's ordering.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Proverbs 3 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter gathers a sequence of fatherly admonitions and promised outcomes into one of the book's great wisdom homilies. Its opening movement urges remembrance, mercy, fidelity, trust in God, reverence, and the honoring of the Lord with just labor, attaching to each command the gifts of life, peace, bodily well-being, and abundance. The middle then turns to divine discipline and a sustained praise of wisdom herself: she is more valuable than wealth, bears long life and honor in her hands, grants peaceful paths, and stands near God's own creative ordering of the world. The latter section returns to exhortation, promising security, sleep without terror, and the Lord's steadiness on the disciple's path, before narrowing into social ethics that forbid withholding good, scheming against a trusting neighbor, or envying violent men. The conclusion sets the covenantal contrast plainly: the righteous enjoy God's counsel, blessing, grace, and glory, while the lawless live under curse and public shame.
