The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 4ΠΑΡΟΙΜΙΑΙ Δ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Inherited wisdom is handed on as a guarded path of light set against the self-darkening way of the wicked.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Proverbs 4 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter is a sustained paternal exhortation built around inherited instruction: a father addresses sons, recalls how he himself once received teaching from his own parents, and then hands that same wisdom forward as a guarded tradition. The first half stresses acquisition and love of wisdom, promising honor, long life, and secure movement for the one who clings to her. The middle sharply contrasts the righteous and the wicked: the wicked cannot sleep without doing harm and feed on lawlessness, whereas the righteous advance like growing light. The final section narrows the appeal to disciplined attention, heart-keeping, speech, sight, and steady walking, so that the disciple's whole bodily orientation is trained toward life. As in the earlier chapters, wisdom is not merely knowledge but a path to be entered, guarded, and embodied.
