The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 22ΠΑΡΟΙΜΙΑΙ ΚΒ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Proverbs 22 joins compact comparative sayings about reputation, wealth, prudence, generosity, company, and justice with a more extended instructional turn beginning at verse 17.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Proverbs 22 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Proverbs 22 joins compact comparative sayings about reputation, wealth, prudence, generosity, company, and justice with a more extended instructional turn beginning at verse 17. In the Septuagint form, the chapter moves from short antithetical maxims into a deliberate pedagogical sequence that urges the hearer to store wise words in the heart, protect the poor, avoid angry companions and reckless suretyship, and honor ancestral limits. Taken together, the chapter reads as a lesson in moral foresight: the prudent read danger early, the righteous order possessions and speech under the Lord's sight, and the teachable store wisdom inwardly so that truthful response and just action become possible.
