The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 31ΠΑΡΟΙΜΙΑΙ ΛΑ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

In the Septuagint this final chapter falls into two linked movements: a mother’s instruction to a king about disciplined judgment, sober self-command, and advocacy for the weak, followed by an encomium of the strong wife whose labor, prudence, mercy, and public honor order an entire household.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Proverbs 31 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. In the Septuagint this final chapter falls into two linked movements: a mother’s instruction to a king about disciplined judgment, sober self-command, and advocacy for the weak, followed by an encomium of the strong wife whose labor, prudence, mercy, and public honor order an entire household. The LXX presentation places special weight on counsel, practical industry, and speech governed by law and wisdom, so that domestic excellence is shown as a public good rather than a merely private virtue. The chapter closes by subordinating beauty and charm to understanding and the fear of the Lord. Versification follows the LXX.
