The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 7ΠΑΡΟΙΜΙΑΙ Ζ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

A staged seduction becomes a moral anatomy of desire, exposing the foreign woman's path as a descent into death.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Proverbs 7 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter is a tightly shaped wisdom warning against the foreign woman, but the Septuagint gives the opening a distinctive cast by inserting the exhortation to honor the Lord and fear no other. That added piety sharpens the chapter's logic: fidelity to wisdom is already an act of ordered worship, and the seductress is dangerous because she draws the heart away from rightly ordered fear. After the opening commands to internalize wisdom as a guarded treasure and intimate companion, the discourse shifts into a vivid scene observed from the woman's own window. There a naive young man drifts toward her quarter at night, and the woman herself emerges as restless, mobile, shameless, and verbally manipulative. Her speech is calculated to make sin appear safe, festive, and hidden behind religious pretense, luxurious space, and an absent husband. The closing admonition interprets the scene for the hearer: this is not a private romantic encounter but a path downward into Hades, where many have already been struck down. The chapter therefore works both as narrative and as moral anatomy, exposing how desire is staged, persuaded, and finally ruined.

My son, keep my words, and hide my commandments beside yourself; my son, honor the Lord and you will be strong, and besides him fear no other.

Commandκαὶ πλὴν δὲ
The opening appeal joins inward custody of wisdom to explicit fear of the Lord, a striking Septuagintal framing for the whole warning.
