The Book of Psalms, Chapter 3ΨΑΛΜΟΙ Γ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Besieged and outnumbered, the singer lies down in peace because deliverance belongs to the Lord.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 3 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The first sustained psalm of personal distress in the collection, and the LXX preserves its movement from siege to confidence with striking economy. The Davidic superscription places the prayer in the shadow of Absalom's revolt, so that political betrayal and filial grief stand behind the complaint without overwhelming it. The poem opens by counting enemies and reporting their taunt that God will not save, then turns sharply to confession: the Lord is shield, glory, and the one who lifts the bowed head. From that center the psalmist recalls answered prayer, dares to sleep and wake under divine support, and asks God to arise against surrounding foes. It closes with the classic summary of trust: salvation belongs to the Lord, and his blessing rests upon his people. Versification follows the LXX.
