Patient trust forbids envy as the righteous wait for the Lord and outlast the wicked.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 36 follows the standard Septuagint form represented in the Rahlfs-Hanhart tradition. In LXX numbering this chapter corresponds to Psalm 37 in the Hebrew tradition and functions as a wisdom psalm of patient trust: it repeatedly forbids envy at the temporary success of the wicked and answers that temptation with commands to hope, do good, wait quietly, and keep the Lord's way. The poem is structured by sharp contrasts between the short-lived flourishing of sinners and the durable inheritance of the righteous, especially in the recurring promise that the meek or upright will inherit the land. Several Septuagint turns are notable, including the pastoral nuance of v. 3, where the hearer is told to dwell in the land and be fed on its richness, and the aging personal testimony of v. 25, which grounds the psalm's teaching in lived experience. It closes by gathering the whole argument into a final confession: salvation and protection come from the Lord alone. Versification follows the LXX.
