The Book of Psalms, Chapter 54ΨΑΛΜΟΙ ΝΔ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Pressure, betrayal, and civic treachery turn the lament into a desperate cry for escape and justice.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 54 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. A long lament of pressure, betrayal, and civic corruption. It begins with an urgent cry for God to hear, traces the speaker's inner collapse under enemy violence, imagines flight into the wilderness, and then turns toward a city whose public life is filled with strife, exploitation, and deceit. At the emotional center stands the wound of betrayal by a trusted companion with whom the psalmist once shared table fellowship and worship. From there the prayer moves back into confidence: God hears, redeems, humbles the unrepentant, and invites the righteous to cast their care upon him. Versification follows the LXX.
