The Book of Psalms, Chapter 55ΨΑΛΜΟΙ ΝΕ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Fearful vulnerability steadies itself with the refrain that trusting God is stronger than fear.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 55 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. A compact individual lament shaped by the refrain of trust. After a detailed superscription about David's seizure in Gath, the singer asks for mercy under relentless human pressure, names the trampling hostility of enemies, and repeatedly answers fear with confidence in God and his word. The middle of the poem exposes the enemies' speech, ambush, and stalking, then appeals for divine judgment and for God to register tears and mortal vulnerability. The closing movement returns to praise, vows thank-offerings, and confesses deliverance from death so that life may continue before God in the light of the living. Versification follows the LXX.

εἰς τὸ τέλος ὑπὲρ τοῦ λαοῦ τοῦ ἀπὸ τῶν ἁγίων μεμακρυμμένου τῷ Δαυιδ εἰς στηλογραφίαν ὁπότε ἐκράτησαν αὐτὸν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι ἐν Γεθ

For the end, concerning the people removed from the holy things, for David, for an inscription, when the foreigners seized him in Gath.

Liturgical and historical superscriptionεἰς τὸ τέλος
The heading joins worship use, Davidic attribution, and the Gath setting so the lament is heard as exile prayer from a moment of seizure among foreigners.
