The Book of Psalms, Chapter 56ΨΑΛΜΟΙ ΝϚ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

From the cave, the singer rises under God's wings from danger into public praise.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 56 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. It moves from cave-borne vulnerability to public praise. Its superscription recalls David's flight from Saul into the cave, and the prayer itself asks for mercy under the shelter of God's wings until violent lawlessness passes. The middle of the psalm alternates between confidence in heaven-sent deliverance and vivid description of predatory human speech, then the repeated refrain lifts the focus to God's glory above heaven and earth. The closing movement turns fully into resolved praise: a steadfast heart, awakened instruments, thanksgiving among peoples and nations, and a final celebration of God's mercy and truth as they rise to cosmic height. Versification follows the LXX.

For the end: Do not destroy. For David, for an inscription, when he fled from Saul's presence into the cave.

Liturgical and historical superscriptionεἰς τὸ τέλος
The heading joins performance directions with the remembered setting of David's cave-flight, giving the whole psalm its atmosphere of pressured refuge.
