The Book of Psalms, Chapter 58ΨΑΛΜΟΙ ΝΗ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Night watch, snarling enemies, and remembered strength frame a fierce plea for God to act.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 58 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. It joins a historical superscription about Saul's surveillance of David with a fierce night-lament against violent pursuers. The opening movement piles up rescue petitions, protests innocence, and asks the God of Israel to inspect both the attackers and the wider nations. The middle of the poem alternates between mocking descriptions of the enemies as prowling dogs and confident expectation that God will expose, scatter, and humble them without letting their downfall become morally forgettable. The closing turn answers danger with morning praise: God's strength, mercy, and protection become the singer's refuge and song. Versification follows the LXX.

εἰς τὸ τέλος μὴ διαφθείρῃς τῷ Δαυιδ εἰς στηλογραφίαν ὁπότε ἀπέστειλεν Σαουλ καὶ ἐφύλαξεν τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ τοῦ θανατῶσαι αὐτόν

For the end, Do Not Destroy, for David, for an inscription, when Saul sent and watched his house in order to kill him.

Liturgical superscription and historical noticeεἰς τὸ τέλος
The heading combines musical direction, Davidic attribution, and the episode of Saul's surveillance so that the lament begins inside remembered mortal danger.
