Theme

Wilderness thirst deepens into praise, clinging love, and confidence that enemies will fall.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 62 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Wilderness thirst becomes sanctuary-shaped desire, then ripens into praise, attachment, and confidence that enemies will fall while the king rejoices in God. Its superscription places David in the wilderness of Judah, and the poem opens by describing thirst for God with language that joins bodily dryness to spiritual longing. From that hunger the singer turns toward remembered sanctuary vision, then into sustained praise: God's mercy is better than life, the hands rise in blessing, and the mouth answers with exultant speech. Night meditation and the shelter of God's wings deepen the movement from need to security, until the final verses contrast the psalmist's close attachment to God with the downfall of those who seek his life. The closing line widens personal deliverance into royal and communal rejoicing as the king and all who swear by God are vindicated while lying mouths are stopped. Versification follows the LXX.
