Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Theme

Envy dissolves in the sanctuary, where the singer sees the wicked's end and clings to God as portion forever.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 72 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This wisdom psalm of Asaph begins with a confession that God is truly good to the upright, then immediately narrates how close the singer came to collapse when he envied the apparent ease and prosperity of the wicked. The middle movement dwells on their arrogance, their blasphemous speech, and the temptation to think piety has been pointless, until entry into God's sanctuary reframes their future and exposes how suddenly their stability will vanish. From there the poem turns inward: the psalmist admits his own brutish ignorance, rejoices that God has held and guided him, and climaxes in the confession that God himself is the heart's portion forever. The closing contrast sets those far from God on the path to ruin while declaring that the singer's good is to cling to God and proclaim his praises in Zion. Versification follows the LXX.
