The Book of Psalms, Chapter 73ΨΑΛΜΟΙ ΟΓ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

A desecrated sanctuary and shattered signs draw out a communal lament over the seeming triumph of the enemy.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 73 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This Asaphic communal lament opens with the shock of divine rejection and then lingers over the desecration of Zion's sanctuary, where hostile powers have planted their own signs, hacked down its doors, and burned the holy place. The middle complaint grieves the disappearance of prophetic guidance and asks how long the enemy will keep insulting God's name. From there the psalm turns into a strong confession that the same God who once ruled chaos, crushed the dragon, and ordered day, night, and seasons still reigns over the world. The closing petitions ask that covenant, worship, and the cause of the poor not be forgotten, and they end by summoning God to rise and answer the ongoing uproar of his adversaries. Versification follows the LXX.

συνέσεως τῷ Ασαφ ἵνα τί ἀπώσω ὁ θεός εἰς τέλος ὠργίσθη ὁ θυμός σου ἐπὶ πρόβατα νομῆς σου

A contemplation of Asaph. Why, O God, did you cast us off to the end? Why was your anger kindled against the sheep of your pasture?

Opening protestἵνα τί
The psalm begins with a double why-question that interprets national ruin as a bewildering experience of divine rejection and anger against God's own flock.
